As photographers in Kansas City MO we crave creative sessions like these that fuel the soul. The way we turn imagination into a visual story is essentially through sessions like this. This is where we play with light, color, texture and composition in a way that allows us to break the rules. It allows photographers, like us, to experiment with new techniques, collaborate with other artists, and truly push our boundaries without the restraints of client expectations and allow us to do what we do best: encapsulating the joy in discovery and finding beauty in the unexpected. These sessions are where passion meets purpose. They are where we reconnect with why we picked up the camera in the first place and fundamentally allow me to grow as a photographer.
This model couple we were given the opportunity with for a local Kansas City shootout couldn’t have been more perfect. With their wedding coming up this fall, their love was just electric on and off camera. It’s the kind of love where every glance and every touch was felt on its own level, and even as an outsider their connection was prominent. It’s as if the whole world has narrowed down to just two people, and they had really known each other forever. There’s a genuine innocence as well, and a purity in how freely their raw emotions are given without any hesitation. Young love is so exciting, however any stage of love truly brings its own beauty; whether you’re celebrating one year, or twenty years, you two are on a journey together and we’re here for it.
This session really allowed me to grow as an artist in so many ways. Firstly, I pumped the brakes on this session and took some time to slow down to allow for more authentic moments. As a result, our couple had time to settle in and force the focus to be on one another. This allowed the magic to naturally unfold organically, and not all sessions are like this. When this happens, it’s undoubtedly beautiful, it’s the storytelling part of photography we love.
Secondly with this session, we challenged ourselves into new lighting situations. Direct sunlight and indoor shade both brought on their own set of new hurdles. Much to my surprise, I learned that I absolutely LOVE direct sunlight. Who knew?! The skin tones and colors were perfect, and it only complimented their session so beautifully.
Lastly, we tried a totally new location. We’ve never been to the Campbell Dome House before, so this was unchartered territory. It forced me out of my comfort zone and required me to try new things. It required me to move with my feet. I focused on new angles, perspectives and approaches in storytelling. I know I overshot at this session, but that’s what it’s all about. Experimenting.
In conclusion, take the risks and don’t be afraid to try new things. This session pushed me so far out of my comfort zone and I loved every second of it.
